Our book for January is Becoming by Michelle Obama, a truly inspiring story. She tells her story from her own perspective, in her own words.
Beginning with her childhood in the South Side of Chicago, she describes living in a one bedroom upper flat with her parents and brother. However, her parents do everything they can to give their children opportunities. Michelle attends a magnet high school, and goes on to attend Princeton and then Harvard Law School.
She describes how she worked for a prestigious law firm, but then left to join public service types of firms. She meets Barack Obama at her work place; they marry, and then he goes on to run for the legislature in Illinois, despite her dislike of politics.
Much of the second half of the book is devoted to her White House years. Read the book and join us in a discussion, led by Martha Babcock, in the lounge at 2:00 on January 9.
