We began our year by reading Tara Westover’s memoir, Educated. Ruth T. led us in a discussion of her difficult childhood in a Mormon home, with a father who was probably bipolar and definitely abusive of his children. They are home-schooled by their mother. Tara finds her way to BYU, and uses her intellectual brilliance to go to graduate school and build a life as a writer.
Our October book is again a memoir, Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein by Jamie Bernstein. We all know who the musician and composer Leonard Bernstein was, but this book gives us a look at the Bernstein family, and the trials of living with her famous father. It was an exciting life, living in the Dakota in the heart of New York, seeing the artistic greats coming to her home, having a father who doted on his 3 children. But he also led a double life, with a wife plus male lovers, and he could be verbally cruel to his daughter. She details how she built a life in music after her father’s death.
Mary E. is leading our discussion on Thursday, October 10, at 2:00 in the Lounge. Everyone is invited to read the book and join our discussion.
